Worth the trip
Three farm days you can only have here.
Plenty of places will show you around a farm. But cooking lunch from the paddy outside Chiang Mai, feeding a reindeer herd on the Arctic Circle, and walking the lemon terraces above Sorrento belong to these corners of the world and nowhere else.

Cook From the Field in Chiang Mai
In the hills around Chiang Mai the cooking class is not in a kitchen, it is on the farm. You walk the herb beds and the rice paddy with the family who works the land, cut your own lemongrass and Thai basil, learn to pound a curry paste in a stone mortar, then cook four or five dishes over a wok fire and eat them at a long table in the open air. Nowhere else turns a farm visit into lunch quite like this.

A Reindeer Farm on the Arctic Circle
Just outside Rovaniemi the snow comes early and the working farms keep reindeer and huskies the way they have for generations. You meet the herder, feed the reindeer lichen from your hand, take a short sleigh ride across the white fields, and warm up by the fire with berry juice while the dogs sing. A farmyard unlike any other on earth, right under the northern lights.

Lemon Groves Above Sorrento
On the terraces above Sorrento the lemons grow as big as your fist under pergolas of old timber, and the family farm still presses its own olive oil and bottles its own limoncello. You walk the groves with the owner, learn how the famous sfusato lemon is grown and picked, taste the oil and the cheese made on site, and sit down to a long lunch with the sea far below. The Mediterranean farm at its most generous.

Which kind of day
What do you want from the farm?
A farm day can be a cooking class, a morning with the animals, or a slow walk through the fields with a tasting at the end. Three ways to spend it, depending on what pulls you out to the country.
Tuscany & the South
Italy feeds you from the farm.
The whole country runs on the family farm. A Tuscan agriturismo where you roll pasta and churn gelato before lunch among the vines, the lemon terraces above Sorrento heavy with fruit the size of your fist, an olive press in the hills, a cheese room where the morning’s mozzarella is still warm. You pick, you taste, you sit down to a long table, and you eat the place itself.

The farmyard on the edge of the Arctic.
Around Rovaniemi the working farms keep reindeer and huskies through the long northern winter. You feed the herd lichen from your hand, glide across the snow behind the sleigh, meet the dogs that pull it, and thaw out by the fire with hot berry juice. Bring the kids, bring your gloves, and watch the sky for the lights once the sun drops.

It always ends at the table.
A good farm day is never just the walk through the fields. It is the family who has worked the land for three generations, the smell of the kitchen, the basket you filled yourself, and the long table where everything you picked comes back as lunch. You leave with dirt on your boots, a full plate behind you, and a sense of exactly where your food comes from.

Where lunch grows in the next field.
The hill farms above Chiang Mai where you cook what you cut, the Kampot plantations that grow the world’s most prized pepper, the Mekong orchards heavy with rambutan and dragon fruit. These are farm days with a slower, greener rhythm: a morning in the paddy or the spice garden, a tuk-tuk between the fields, and a local who can name every plant along the path.

By time in the fields
How long do you want on the farm?
Some days you want a quick walk through the plantation and a tasting. Some days you want the orchard, a wagon ride and a board of everything it grows. And some days you want the whole thing: pick it in the morning, cook it for lunch. Pick the day, we will point you at the farm.
A couple of hours
Just walk the rows.A short stroll through the plantation with the grower: how the crop is planted, picked and dried, a tasting at the end, and back to town before lunch.
Half a day
Taste the whole harvest.A guided tour of the orchard or estate, a tractor or wagon ride between the fields, and a tasting board of everything the land grows, picked that morning.
A full day on the farm
Pick it, cook it, eat it.Out to the farm for the morning, into the herb garden and the rice paddy, then a hands-on kitchen where the lunch you sit down to is the one you just made.
The original farm-to-table
In Thailand, the class is on the farm.
In the hills around Chiang Mai the best cooking schools are working organic farms. You start in the herb beds and the rice paddy, learn what grows in a Thai kitchen garden, pound your own curry paste, then cook a string of dishes over a wok flame and eat them looking out over the fields. A half-day or a full day, hands in the soil and then on the wok.
